Hack and Slash (not the D&D kind)

I’m in the process of rewriting, which means choosing which of your old words lives and which ones die. Adverbs… good grief am I finding a lot of adverbs. Not college freshman numbers but more than I think I should have. They really do just fill in space, too. I am clearing them away like brush fires clear dry grass. You never think you’re writing unnecessary words at the time but the proof is right before your eyes, and they have grown like weeds in the manuscript. Time to trim.

Picking a place to write

Boy, did I botch this one today. I like coffee shops as they are generally relaxed, quiet and unhurried sorts of places to sit and think. I made a mistake today, though. I walked into a coffee shop in Noho  (I guess. These neighborhoods are mostly new creations now anyway.) in New York City to find loud, I mean blaring, techno pop. This is awful for concentrating on real writing so I’m blogging while I wait for my appointment and browsing wedding officiants. Anything to postpone the inevitable, right? I can’t wait to get back to my own cafe in Brooklyn, where I know that there’s peace and quiet and I can work. Where do you guys like to work?

Working title needs work

So, I’m plugging away at the new draft of my novel, Overpopulated, and I realize that this title ain’t cutting it. It’s weird in a way how I remember occasionally why I picked it when I started writing this over a year and a half ago.  But I can’t explain it either without taking too long. I have to come up with something that really grabs your attention. I don’t really want to take time away from writing this to think on a title either. I’m hoping my subconscious kicks in and gives me the answer soon.

Quite a lot of work this week!

So…I’ve begun what you could call the fourth draft of my first novel (completed, that is), working title is still “Overpopulated.” It needs polish and rewriting but I’m excited about the work I’m doing on it. Making new discoveries about its world all the time! Expect a review of The Trip at harrybadface.com this week and possibly one on The Brotherhood of Satan that could pop up on yet another website. More details to come. What are you working on?
